MLM - Is It A Scam? The Truth!
by Aziz Jangbar

MLM is a very different type of business from traditional businesses most people are familiar with. In a traditional business you are only focused on selling your products, and making a profit from those sales. But MLM, on the other hand, is also fundamentally about selling products, but what makes it different is that it is about leveraging your time, effort and skills as well. In other words, it's a smart way to sell products for a company, because you are leveraging yourself. The way MLMers leverage their business is by building a team of distributors who will duplicate their efforts. So as an MLMer, youre doing two things at the same time; youre bringing people into your business, training them and helping them succeed, while youre also marketing and selling your products. In order to succeed and create a large income in MLM, you have to do both.

There are many other differences between a traditional business and MLM. One being that unlike a traditional business, MLM does not cost very much to get started. In most cases, you need to spend money to get started in a traditional business. Because youre NOT getting a job, youre starting your own business. Businesses cost money to start, jobs dont (they cost you your valuable time and freedom). In MLM, however, there is hardly any cost to get started. In fact, many MLM companies these days will just give you the business for free when you buy or sell their products. This is a HUGE benefit of an MLM business, but it can also be a negative. When people get started in an MLM business and they don't have to pay anything for it, they don't think of it as a real business. They start treating it like a get-rich-quick scheme, like a short-cut way of getting out of their financial problems.

When MLMers start treating their MLM business like a get-rich-quick scheme, they fail and then start blaming their MLM company for their failure and start calling it a scam, because in their mind it was designed to make them rich quick. When in fact the business of MLM was never meant to be a get-rich-quick scheme. It requires you to grow and become a leader. It also demands your attention, time, effort and commitment to build. But it can pay extremely well and give you more freedom than you can have doing anything else.

Of course, like any other business, there are some characters out there who will sell you their get-rich-quick deal disguised as an MLM business, take your hard earned money and disappear. Funny thing is that many times, these scammers themselves don't realize they are scamming you. They try to put together a program to help people make a lot of money fast. But if their program is not based on real good business principles, they simply cannot survive for too long. These scammers do not represent the real MLM industry.

The only way to consistently make money over the long-term is to create a win-win situation.

MLM scams can very easily be avoided by using simple common sense, and by keeping greed and desperation out of the equation. Ask these basic questions when considering an MLM opportunity:

  • Does this MLM business opportunity make real business sense? Or is it just based on hype and wild claims?
  • Are the products competitively priced? Is the quality of the products acceptable? Would I buy the products even if there were no MLM opportunity involved?
  • Are they claiming to pay me for doing nothing? If they are, then run away from these scams as fast as you can! (they are really after your money here)
  • Are they promising to pay more money than they are taking in?
  • Are they charging you large signup fees (anything more than a $100 USD is not acceptable) or annual renewal fees? There is really no need for these in MLM.

Base your decisions on logic instead of emotions (remember Spock?).

A good rule of thumb is to only look at MLM companies that will talk about their products first and then about their compensation plan, and NOT the other way round.

MLM is a great way to become financially independent, there is nothing like it! It can give you time freedom, money freedom and location freedom. Its simple, its inexpensive and it can work for just about anybody. What more could anyone ask? Just make sure that you do some research on the company you are starting with, and just use good common sense. This will ensure that you wont be getting into anything that might be a scam.

But whatever you do, dont let the fear of getting scammed stop you from starting a business that can change your life forever.
